THE alaska LOG CABIN TRAIL
The humble log cabin is practically a symbol of Alaska. It is made of material at hand: trees. Many Native cultures built half-underground precursors to the log cabin, wherever trees were available, across Alaska, adding slabs of spruce bark as shingles. Later, when homesteaders arrived, often from northern climes, including Scandinavia or the upper Midwest, the newcomers brought the Scandinavian tradition of the log home with them, adapting skills they already knew. Today, Alaskans throughout the state still value the log cabin as a home. Photo, top, is of Neil Hannan's cabin in Kenny Lake. Left, a Talkeetna cabin.
